Business Model (Making Money)
It's "free"? How will you make money?
When we say "free", we are primarily referring to the license terms which are "free" in that they allow you many freedoms in what you do with the work. We are not primarily talking about the cost, although it is true that the free license means you can get a copy without paying us. There are many reasons why this is beneficial, since it means more people will take a chance on watching the show and it will have much more opportunity to spread farther in popularity. However, we certainly do sell official copies (and other merchandise) which we hope you will be willing to pay for, for the authenticity, or out of a desire to thank us for our work.
Don't you think artists should be paid?!
Yes. Please pay us. Next question...
No, seriously, we have a number of ways you can contribute. If you liked watching the show (or anticipate that you're going to), you can just donate money, which will then go to fund the production and pay the contributing artists.
Why're the DVDs so cheap?
Well, without the huge infrastructure of a video publishing house, distributors, and lawsuits,
it's a lot easier to make a profit on a small sticker price. We have much less overhead to worry about.
Why're the DVDs so expensive?
The pre-ordered DVDs are intended to be "fan" or "collector's edition" copies and will have
a lot of extras, including a DVD with the "source code" for the episode (3D models, rigs, production art, etc).
They are also, of course, one way we raise cash to create the episode. After production, if there is sufficient
interest, we may produce a budget version of the disk which will be cheaper.
